Lenten Series on Everyday Justice: Clothes

The Story Behind that Shirt You’re Wearing.

The process our clothes take.
Cotton fields ->
- fertilizers and pesticides (1/4 of the worlds insecticides are used on cotton)
- So the farmers ingest the chemicals, the earth soaks them up, and you wear them.
Harvesting -> Laundering -> Dyeing
- Wrinkle Free, Flame Retardant, UV Blocking = More Chemicals
Store -> Your Back

Verses to Consider:

"You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns. You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), lest he cry against you to the Lord, and you be guilty of sin." Deuteronomy 24:14-15

"Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day." Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Issues often struggled with:
- Ethically made clothing isn’t stylish.
- Ethically made clothing is more expensive.
- I can’t find clothing that is ethically made.
- If I don’t buy ethically made clothing, at least the workers in the sweatshops will still have jobs.

Ethically made clothing does exist. It is more expensive because along the way the workers are being paid a true wage.

Here are some resources where you can further educate yourself and find ethically made clothing:
